Saints John and Paul
This icon depicts Sts. John and Paul, two early Chistian Roman soldiers who supported each other as they were being martyred for their faith. It honors all who acted as true friends in the face of threat to their own safety and well being: those who would not abandon a wounded colleague, those who made sure their fellow workers were safely evacuated before they left their posts, those who passed up a ride on an elevator so that another could proceed them to safety. It honors as well all those who acted as friends - doing whatever they could to try to ease the pain of those who had lost loved ones in the attack. It reminds us that we very often take our friendships for granted, but often it is only simple human kindness and concern that proves to be the balm to heal the wounds of the heart. The fact that Sts. John and Paul were soldiers reminds us that wars, when they must be fought, are to be entered into only as a last resort and with the utmost reluctance. This icon encourages us to pray for the men and women who stand in harm's way, that hostilities may cease and they be returned home safely to their families. At the command of Jesus we pray also for our enemies, that we can all learn to live in peace with one another.
"Beauty will save the world. To be able to inspire others to love God and all creatures is the goal of my painting icons."
